I've shared a couple short films by Jubilee Project in the past. There is something about what they choose to produce that always, I mean always, inspires me and makes me think. This particular video was released on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and asks the question, "What would the world look like without black people? "
I'm not sure how many of you are outside of the US, or perhaps aren't completely aware of what has been happening in our country lately. There have been movements all across the nation that are bringing attention to police brutality and abuse of power. The media is calling it a revival of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
Personally, for me, "the world without black people" would mean that my identity as I know it would be completely different. I wouldn't have grown up loving hip hop, the art and artists that come from it. Even more, I wouldn't have been able to identify with anyone in mainstream media. I wouldn't have had Aaliyah. For God's sake! We wouldn't have had Beyoncé!
Seriously though, I think this question goes beyond just asking what the world would be like without black people. The world without diversity, understanding it and not just shaming each other for our differences, is unimaginable to me. Honestly, I would not even exist.
